Head of netball at GSAL Cath Johnson said: “It was a fantastic team effort from every member in the squad. Winning a national competition is an unbelievable experience for the girls and having three teams in the finals is exceptional – only one other school achieved this.”

Alex Kirk, the U16 team’s coach, said: “It was a really long hard day for the girls, they were amazing. They have worked hard in training and have learnt that they can achieve their goals if they pull together as a team. They had to be mentally tough to recover from 4-2 down at half-time to come back and win 7-6 in a very tight match.”

Team captain Rosie Harris, year 11, said: “As our first time in the national finals we were expecting the day to be intense, however we gelled well as a team and all the tactical and fitness training paid off on the day.”

Greenhead College Netball Coach Sue Young: "An all-Yorkshire final against GSAL was the icing on the cake! It proved to be a thrilling showdown going down to the wire with the 'golden goal'.  This is a magnificent achievement by Greenhead as they are the first Yorkshire winners of this challenging Under 19s trophy for over 45 years."

Captain Tayla Booty: "All our hard work over the last year and our teamwork on the day helped us win the ultimate trophy!"

West Yorkshire Success in the National Schools Regional Competition

The 2013 national schools final were played in atrocious weather on 16 March in Basildon.

All West Yorkshire schools had qualified from the Regional Round (Yorkshire) of National Schools, which took place at Ashville College Harrogate in February.  The WY schools finished 1st and 2nd in their groups to qualify for the finals, as follows:

U14 GSAL (Grammar School at Leeds) and Woodhouse Grove
U16 Brooksbank and GSAL
U19 GSAL and Greenhead.

In the National finals, in the U14 competition GSAL were a commendable third.  They made the semi finals with equal points to Talbot Heath but an inferior goal difference.  Having been beaten by Guildford in the semi final 10-8, GSAL went on to take third place beating Talbot Heath in the third place play off match.

In the U19 competition GSAL made it to the final.   It was a replay of the match between GSAL and Bromsgrove with GSAL being successful on that occasion, with a marginal 5-4 success.  It was an incredible match to end proceedings on the day with neither side managing to pull clear during the 14 minutes of play.  Extra time was required to decide the winner - Bromsgrove - but well played GSAL U19's.  Great character, skill and passion on display for a well fought second place!
